Form and Function: Materials Physics for Forming True Functional Materials

The interplay of electronics, magnetics, lattice dynamics, and structure in complex materials is scientifically important and has potential for new information, sensing, and communications technologies. The spectrum of materials born of elemental and structural choice in complex materials far exceeds our current knowledge. Although everything from information technology to chemical sensing relies on new materials, the rush to application too often undercuts itself due to poor quality or understanding of the intrinsic properties. In this talk, I will outline several of our research efforts to produce true functional materials: repeatable, well-understood materials that are ready to be used in device applications. This includes innovation in materials synthesis and deposition as well as advanced characterization to understand the physics behind each system, and guide improvement of material properties.


Adam J. Hauser is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Alabama. Dr. Hauser hails from New Jersey where he obtained a bachelor's degree at Rutgers. He received a PhD degree in physics from The Ohio State University in 2010. He won the California NanoSystems Institute’s Elings Prize Postdoctoral Fellowship to conduct research at the University of California, Santa Barbara, from 2012 to 2015. In 2015 Dr. Hauser joined the faculty of the University of Alabama. Information about his research group can be found at http://hauserlab.ua.edu/
