ACE Medical Internship – Pulmonology with Dr. D. Files Clark

by Oksana Creech, C'17

Over the course of seven weeks I learned a lot about lung diseases and conditions such as COPD, emphysema, ARDS, bronchitis, pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, etc. Most of my time at the hospital was spent shadowing Dr. Clark Files and his colleagues in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Pulmonary Recovery Clinic and the Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU). While in the ICU and the IMCU I observed procedures, attended morning rounds with the team of doctors and nurses and visited the patients. I learned how to read a CT scan (not an expert, but could pick out the basics). I really loved being exposed to different procedures that you often see on TV and working with such a great, close group of doctors who were willing to teach and help me.

It is a hard adjustment living in the middle of nowhere NC, but you can live on campus and get to know other students from around the area that will also be at the hospital. I really advise people that are interested in the medical field but have not had a close experience like this to apply. This was great for me because I was unsure if I wanted to pursue medicine, but this internship helped me get my mind back on the right track.
