Author Danielle Evans to give Stacy Allen Haines Lecture

The Stacy Allen Haines Lecture will be given this year by Danielle Evans, recipient of the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize, the Paterson Prize, and the Hurston-Wright Award, as well a National Book Foundation “5 Under 35″ honoree. A graduate of Columbia University and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, her stories have appeared in The Paris Review, A Public Space, The Best American Short Stories 2008, and The Best American Short Stories 2010. Her collection of stories, Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self, is her first book. An African American who grew up primarily in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., Evans writes with an anthropologist's eye for detail, often about black and mixed-race teenagers and young adults navigating a post-Civil Rights America. She teaches creative writing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The lecture will take place at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in Convocation Hall.
