The mission of the Sewanee Summer Music Festival is to educate talented young musicians from around the world through close work with faculty mentors, intensive orchestral and chamber music study, and frequent performance. The SSMF fosters an atmosphere of collaboration and inspiration and promotes the belief that all people are elevated through the experience of making and hearing great music together.
The Sewanee Summer Music Festival, at the University of the South, in Sewanee, Tennessee, is an internationally acclaimed summer festival combining a month-long program for advanced music students and a professional concert series.
Each summer, over 150 aspiring young musicians from around the United States and abroad join with teachers, performers, and internationally recognized guest artists to create a musical community in Sewanee. Here students receive musical training of the highest caliber and draw from the wealth of experience of a distinguished and dedicated faculty.
With one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country, Sewanee’s 13,000 forested acres and stunning Gothic architecture provide an inspiring setting for life-changing musical experiences.
Selective enrollment and individual attention give each student tremendous opportunities for musical growth and development. Students work closely with the faculty in private lessons, chamber music coaching, sectional rehearsals, master classes, and performances. The unique setting at Sewanee also provides students with frequent opportunities to meet with resident faculty, conductors, and guest artists in an informal manner.
The SSMF was established in 1957 to provide a comprehensive training program emphasizing performance experience. Sewanee not only prepares students for the challenges professional musicians must meet, but also makes them lifetime lovers of music.
