SEWANEE SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL- A PATRIOTIC CELEBRATION

Sewanee, Tenn. – On July 4th, the Sewanee Summer Music Festival participated in the town of Sewanee’s celebration of our nation’s Independence. Beginning at 8 a.m., brass players Nathan Hudson, John Burson, Bowen Dungen, Trey English, and Eric Hale performed a patriotic collection of music while members of the community raised the American flag at Juhan Bridge in Abbo’s Alley. The SSMF students then enjoyed 15 community events including a Mutt Show, dunking booth, and a book signing. Later at 7 p.m., SSMF Faculty and Students presented a special concert in honor of the Fourth. Conductors Bruce Heim and Dr. Mark Babbitt organized and arainged the evening to include the Star Spangled Banner, The Gospel Hall, American Folk Song Suite, Hymn to the Fallen from Saving Private Ryan, America from Westside Story, Tiger of San Pedro, Tuba Riger Rag, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Armed Forces Medley Salute, and Stars and Stripes Forever. The auditorium at Guerry Hall was filled with patriotic attendants who thoroughly enjoyed the American inspired music. The evening ended with a stroll to Lake Cheston to enjoy the firework show.
